Abstract
As we head into 2024, a look at some of the best new food, drink and equipment ideas coming into the market.

apetito – Nine new dishes

Hospital caterers can enjoy fresh innovation from healthcare meals provider apetito, which has launched nine brand-new dishes. The new dishes include items from the allergen free range such as cottage pie, butterbean & cauliflower curry and vegan tomato soup.

Others in the range include vegan root vegetable pie, leeks in cheese sauce, root vegetable medley, apple crumble, salmon tagine and lemon & orange pudding. Neil Hargreaves, interim general manager of apetito’s healthcare division, says: “These new winter dishes are nutritious, warm and comforting options for patients.” www.apetito.co.uk

Premier Foods – Vegan jelly

Louise Wagstaffe, senior culinary adviser for Premier Foods, says: “McDougalls has just launched a vegan jelly that’s certified by the Vegan Society, to provide operators in the public sector with an inclusive dessert option.

“McDougalls Jelly Crystals, available in three flavours (orange, strawberry, and raspberry), can be prepared and served within the same day, with a two-hour setting time. They simply require boiling water, which simplifies preparation.” www.premierfoodservice.co.uk

Merrychef – High-speed oven

The new conneX12e is an ‘affordable’, high-speed oven that is ‘perfect’ for an operator looking to start a hot food menu or expand its offer. It is a ‘plug and play’ countertop unit that is compact and can turn out a chicken burrito in 60 seconds.

The 7” HD touchscreen and pre-programmed cookbook make it easy for staff to be trained to use it. https://info.merrychef.com/connex

Pan’Artisan – Pizza Pala Margherita

Pan’Artisan has launched Mini Pizza Pala Margherita, to meet demand for authentic food-to-go convenience. It provides operators with a tasty, quick to serve product for on-the-go or dine-in.

Stone-baked and ready topped with Italian tomato sauce and a blend of mozzarella and cheddar cheese, it allows the operator to customise with additional toppings to extend choices on the menu. Cook at 200-220 degrees C for about 6-8 minutes until the base is crisp and the cheese melted. www.panartisan.com

Rational – Combi care service

With the iCareSystem AutoDose, Rational offers an integrated cleaning and reserve cartridge system as an option for selected iCombi Pro tabletop units. Cleaner and care products are stored in the cooking system in solid form, enabling autonomous cleaning, either at the push of a button, or according to a cleaning schedule.

Graham Kille, technical sales director at Rational, says: “iCareSystem AutoDose increases work safety, saves time and ensures HACCP hygiene safety.” www.rational-online.com/en_gb/home/

Williams – Blast chillers

Williams says its new blast chiller range is faster, more energy efficient, simpler to operate and uses only natural refrigerant - a greener system that enhances productivity and reduces running costs. The reduction in chilling and freezing times helps deliver savings in energy compared with previous models.

Similarly, the latest Williams Multideck is designed to deliver substantial energy savings, compared to conventional grab and go merchandisers. www.williams-refrigeration.co.uk

Henny Penny – Low-oil-volume fryer

Exclusively available in the UK from Jestic, the new Henny Penny F5 fryer is said to be ‘simple, fast, and clean’ and delivers ‘best-in-class performance’.

It is a powerful, low oil volume fryer that is designed so that any member of the kitchen team can operate it. The F5’s specially designed smaller fry vat means that up to 40% less oil is used whilst delivering the same quality, consistency and volume of cooking. www.hennypenny.com

Meiko – Compact pot-washer

Meiko has launched a space-saving compact pot washer and utensil washing machine which, at only 775mm wide and 898mm deep, takes up less than one square metre of floor space. The large wash chamber, measuring 830mm high, takes everything a pot washer must, including crates, sheet pans, and kitchen utensils.

Paul Anderson, managing director of Meiko, says: “We have engineered one of the smallest, slimmest pot washers but also one of the most powerful.” www.meiko-uk.co.uk/en/

Middleton Foods – Vegan muffins

Middleton has extended its range with the launch of a new vegan muffin & sponge mix into the UK foodservice arena – just in time for Veganuary.

The simple-to-use, ready-made pre-mix ensures ‘high quality and consistency’ that caterers can rely on to create tasty muffins or sponge. Available in 3.5kg bags, simply add water, mix and bake. https://middletonfoods.com/

Panasonic – Rice cooker

Panasonic UK extended its rice cooker series with the addition of the SR-UH36F Electronic Rice Cooker. Featuring 1400w power and a 20-cup/3.6-litre cooking capacity, it can hold rice at the correct temperature for up to 12 hours.

The non-stick coated pan makes clean-up easy and prevents rice from sticking to minimise food waste. It comes with a ‘Taste the Freshness of International Cuisines’ recipe book. www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/professional-cooking/case-studies.html
