Surrey's school meals support farmers during downturn

14th Nov 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Lamb and yoghurt produced by Surrey farmers is being supplied in school meals as part of a Surrey County Council initiative to support the local economy as the recession bites.
Peter Martin, Surrey County Council's Executive Member for Schools, Children and Youth Services, said: "I am delighted that we can feature these local and regional foods on our school menus. "This is a really important step for us in building up relationships with local producers who can help us achieve our aims of featuring wholesome, fresh ingredients for pupils. "These producers all put quality at the heart of what they do so they make perfect partners. We are also reducing food miles and supporting the local economy at the same time during these tough financial times. "We're always looking for more opportunities to feature regional ingredients and we also hope that it will encourage more children to try a school meal."
