Schools in Cardiff flying the freedom-food flag

28th Nov 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Chicken served in Cardiff schools will now be Freedom Food certified after the city council allotted more money to the catering department.
The council also said that the increased budget had enabled the service to offer a wider variety of seasonal salad, fruit and vegetables on daily menus. Sue Eakers, DSU Group Manager for Schools and Lifelong Learning explained more: "The introduction of Freedom Food labelled eggs and chicken has been a great success. We are proud to add to our range of quality, Welsh food products and build on our sustainability agenda. Our priority is the children's health and well-being. The increased spend on ingredients this year means we are able to source good value, high quality and ethical food." Cardiff catering services produces 33,000 meals a day. All 103 of the authority's primary schools have been using Freedom Food chicken since October 2008 and the city's 20 secondary schools will follow suit by January 2009.
