Abstract
Quorn Foods has called on the foodservice industry to go ‘meat free’ on Monday 13 June 2016 – World Meat Free Day – to raise awareness of food security issues linked to overreliance on meat.

Quorn has suggested that one person giving up meat for one day could save the equivalent daily water usage of nine people and generate a carbon saving equivalent to boiling a kettle 388 times.

Tony Davison, commercial manager foodservice, Quorn Foods said: “We’re not asking operators to take meat off their menus forever – just one day. This small show of support carries huge benefits for the world. That’s why we’re encouraging operators to get behind this initiative and back World Meat Free Day to show their customers how small changes can have a massive impact.”

The global population is set to rise by 30% by 2050 – to just shy of 10 billion people. Research suggests that food production would need to rise by 70% to feed this larger, wealthier and more urban population, raising serious food security concerns.

In addition to environmental savings, the campaign will shine a spotlight on how reduced meat consumption can have a huge impact on people’s diets in terms of saturated fat, calorie intake and fibre content.

Operators are being invited to use the www.worldmeatfreeday.com website to find out how much can be saved using the Sustainability Calculator, whilst consumers can find participating restaurants.
