Abstract
Being overweight or obese has been linked to a further eight types of cancer, experts at the World Health Organisation have found.

Excess body fat can increase a middle aged adult’s chance of developing cancers of the stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, ovary, thyroid, the brain tumour meningioma and the blood cancer multiple myeloma.

Experts at the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Cancer on Research (IARC) found the link following analysis of over 1,000 studies on weight and cancer.

The new links follow research conducted by the same team in 2002 who found obesity increased the risk of developing cancer of the colon, gullet, kidney, breast and womb.

Children who are overweight or obese were also found to have an increased risk of developing cancer in later life.
