Abstract
The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and Involvement & Participation Association (IPA) have undertaken research looking at how employee engagement can be promoted amongst agency workers.

The national report stems from focus groups and interviews with staff and chefs across the industry, discussing how employers and recruiters can support agency workers’ voice in the workplace.

Praised for its role in engaging with temporary workers, interim chef recruitment agency CJUK were commended throughout the report: “The approach that CJUK takes creates a good level of commitment from their workers, which translates into how they are perceived by the employers they are placed with – as highly engaged, productive workers.”

Katie Mellor, director of CJUK said: “We are committed to providing our chefs with the most fulfilling and rewarding experience possible, both with us and in their placements. We carry out regular performance reviews, provide HR support and even holiday pay. CJUK put the chefs at the centre of the process, inspiring change and providing a great customer experience.”

The report calls for both agencies and host organisations to ensure agency workers are treated at all times with decency, compassion and respect, which they are entitled to as any other employee, it emphasizes.

The REC and IPA advise agencies to make every effort to ensure agency workers:

  • Are placed according to their individual needs and aspirations.
  • Go to vetted clients.
  • Are able to raise concerns.
  • Are supported with their professional development.
  • Understand and have easy access to their workplace rights.
  • Are given a proper induction.
  • Are treated as ‘part of the team’.
  • Develop a relationship with their line managers.
  • Have the organisation’s values and narrative demonstrated.
  • Are listened to.
