Abstract
Nearly half of caterers (72.7%) don’t know how to ask their employer for a pay rise, a study by jobs board, CV-library, has revealed.

A further 52.9% revealed that they’ve never even negotiated on parts of a job offer.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, said: “Our survey highlights that a natural fear around bringing up the subject of pay is holding many catering professionals back in their careers. Being able to negotiate a pay rise will not only bring you financial reward, but the sense of achievement and increased morale in the workplace.

“If you do feel nervous about discussing your pay with your boss, I’d advise doing your research before approaching them. Find out what other employers are offering for similar positions, or even what your own employer's range is for new hires. Determining your worth is the first step towards knowing how to ask for a pay rise.”

According to CV-Library data, there’s a reason that catering professionals may be finding it difficult to negotiate pay right now. Average salaries for new roles in catering have decreased by 1.7%, translating to a real loss of £441 per year.

Biggins continued: “The economy is tough in the UK right now, with Brexit imminent and the future of the UK uncertain. However, this shouldn’t stop you from starting up negotiations if you’re after a pay rise! With proper planning and the right approach, you can begin to bridge the gap between your expectations and your employer’s budget.”

The survey of 1,200 British professionals also revealed that 64.5% of catering professionals haven’t received a pay rise in the last 12-18 months. Of those who did, (42.9%) received a minimal increase of up to 2%.
