Go fresh vans dish up healthy meals at Scottish schools

8th Dec 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
The Holy Cross High school in Hamilton and Calderglen High in East Kilbride have been given their own snack vans to discourage children from buying unhealthy lunches at school gates.
The Go Fresh vans aim to ensure that pupils who do not want to eat in the school dining hall can still opt for nutritious meals. The mobile catering units offer the same healthy choices available in the schools' dining rooms such as sandwiches, baguettes, salad pots, wraps, soup and fresh fruit. South Lanarkshire Council hopes the vans will entice kids away from local chip shops and burger vans. Councillor Gerry Covery heavily supports the idea: "This is an excellent extension to our Hungry for Success Initiative and, should the pilot project prove successful, then the mobile vans will be rolled out to our other newly built secondary schools when they open for business. "And, during weekends and school holidays, users of Calderglen Country Park and Chatelherault Country Park will also have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the "Go Fresh" mobile catering vans in the parks."
