Abstract
After a week of thunderstorms and rain, what a better way to finish off than with some Fun Friday Food Facts!
  • The Passion Fruit doesn’t get its name for any aphrodisiac qualities but from the religious symbolism of the plant’s flowers which put Spanish missionaries in mind of the crucifixion wounds – known as Christ’s ‘passion’.
  • You can tell a bell pepper's sex by turning it upside down! The ones with four bumps are females and those with three bumps are male. The female peppers are full of seeds but sweeter and better for eating raw and the males are better for cooking.
  • An automatic asparagus harvester has been developed in the US that has electronic ‘eyes’, arms equipped with asparagus knives, and rubber fingers to pick up the spears the same way as field workers.
  • There is an amusement park in Tokyo that offers raw horse flesh-flavoured ice cream.
