Abstract
There's some shockers in this week's compilation of Fun Friday Food Facts - brace yourself!
  • Turkeys have long been popular for Christmas dinner. In Victorian England, some of the birds were raised in Norfolk and taken to market in London. To transport them there, the turkeys wore boots made of sacking or leather. This meant that they could walk to market without hurting their feet on frozen mud on the road. Geese’s feet were meanwhile protected with a covering of tar.
  • Foods that vegans might think safe, but aren’t necessarily, include sugar. Some manufacturers still use bone charcoal to whiten the sugar and remove impurities, so read labels carefully!
  • Soft drinks company Britvic started life in the 1930s as the British Vitamin Products Company with a mission to ‘bring an affordable source of vitamins to the people of Britain’.
  • Kiwi contains more vitamin C than oranges. Despite orange's reputation for being loaded with vitamin C, a kiwi fruit contains nearly twice as much per cup than an orange. It is also rich in potassium and copper.
  • Have you ever wondered how much caffeine is in your favourite drinks? Well, there is the same amount of caffeine in 2 cans of Cola as there is one cup of tea (!); an americano has more caffeine than a can of Red Bull; and chocolate coated raisins have nearly THREE TIMES the amount of caffeins as a cup of brewed coffee (per 100g)!
  • Ketchup was used as a medicine in the 1800s to treat diarrhoea, among other things.
