Abstract
Manchester-based social enterprise Foodinate is celebrating its 100,000th meal donated for those in need.

Since 2016 it has partnered with restaurants and event venues to fight food poverty in the UK.

The UK is the seventh richest country in the world but there are over 13 million people living below the poverty line.

Caroline Stevenson launched Foodinate to help the homeless in Manchester. Since then it has expanded its reach across 12 communities in the UK, working with hospitality 'giants', including The Alchemist and GG Hospitality.

This month they reached 100,000 donated meals to people in need. For every Foodinate item sold on a partnered menu, the partnered business funds a nourishing meal for people in their local community.

The Booth Centre and Mustard Tree receive food to pass on to their beneficiaries in the greater Manchester area.

Shaun Carmody, head chef at Mustard Tree said: “Receiving food from Foodinate means that we can allow our beneficiaries to volunteer in our kitchens, to have the opportunity to come up with their own recipe ideas, learn new skills in cooking and budgeting, and to get involved in making positive decisions – it’s a hugely powerful tool for recovery.”

Alongside their 100,000 meals milestone, Foodinate launched their Business Champions Club this month - a membership package that ensures large-scale venues such as football clubs can also participate in the programme. For each person attending a private event at participating venues, a meal will be provided for a person in need in the local community through Foodinate.

Gary Neville, former Manchester United footballer, who signed up to Foodinate in 2018 said: “We were excited to get involved with Foodinate. Homelessness and poverty is a serious problem, so for our clients to know that they are making a positive difference in the city whilst holding their event with us - that’s a very special thing.”
