Abstract
Event, hospitality and retail caterer Amadeus has been celebrating after apprentice Jack Malkin (20) won the NEC Group’s Apprentice of the Year Award at its annual awards ceremony. He was presented with his award by NEC chief executive Paul Thandi.

Managing director Kevin Watson said:  “We are absolutely delighted for Jack. He was one of the first apprentices to join the scheme, which we launched in partnership with Solihull College in July 2013.

“It has been amazing to witness his development; he has grown in confidence and picked up some vital skills that will prove hugely beneficial in his future career in the hospitality industry.

“Amadeus provides catering services for some of the biggest live events in the country and we are pleased that with the help of Solihull College, we can give young people the opportunity to gain invaluable experience whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification.”

The award was introduced in recognition of Jack’s achievements during his time with Amadeus and Solihull College so far. Since joining the business six months ago Jack has already been promoted to a supervisory role.

Malkin said: “Amadeus is a big brand in a big company so I knew this scheme would help me gain some useful experience in an industry that I have always been interested in.

“The course has given me a taster of all areas of hospitality such as front of house, in the kitchens and bar work and as a result I now know in which area I would like to progress.

“Winning the Apprentice of the Year Award and being recognised in front of all my colleagues across the NEC Group was amazing.”

Before joining the apprenticeship scheme, young people complete an eight week pre-employment training programme and are then invited for interview. Successful applicants are employed by Amadeus for a minimum of 12 months, during which time they complete an apprenticeship framework and gain a professional qualification.

Amadeus has employed a total of 28 apprentices since the partnership with Solihull College was launched in July 2013 and it is set to benefit over 40 young people each year.
