Abstract
Despite the credit crunch consumers are opting for more premium meat cuts when doing their weekly shop, with sales of sirloin steak up by over 50%, according to a study by online grocer Ocado.
Figures also found sales of veal escallops soar by 30%. It's not only premium food that has seen an increase. These quality ingredients are being washed down with higher value wines, with a 15% hike in consumers paying between £10 and £15 a bottle. Across the board there has been a 15% rise in sales of cooking ingredients. Chopping tomatoes have shot up 129% and fresh cooking sauces are up by 165%. Meanwhile, ready meals have dropped by 5%. Other notable changes in the make-up of UK shopping baskets include organic sales sliding to 13% of the average shopping basket in the summer. In addition, Londoners are filling 17% of their shopping basket with organic produce, compared to 14% nationally.
