Abstract
Manchester has been awarded its first star in the five star Sustainable Fish Cities awards system after three Manchester universities and colleges committed to serve certified sustainable fish.

The University of Manchester, The Manchester College and Manchester Metropolitan University pledged to remove endangered and unsustainably caught fish and instead serve ‘Fish to Eat’, certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.

Mary Pegington, co-coordinator of the Manchester Sustainable Fish City Project, leading the campaign, said: “Our mission is to make it the norm to be served sustainable fish when you eat out in Manchester.

“Our universities and colleges have set a fantastic example that this can be done, even at this huge scale. If you can sign up on behalf of a school, workplace or hospital, please get in touch and help the city achieve Sustainable Fish City status.”

Cities are given a star if a pledge is made from all significant higher education institutions. Further stars are awarded for workplace canteen, innovation, hospitals and schools and council catering,

Other involved cities include Durham, with five stars, London, with two stars, and Brighton and Hove, with one star.
