Brits ‘underestimating’ calorie content in food

Britons are ‘drastically’ underestimating the calorie content of the food they eat, according to a new study.

Research produced by Laughing Cow found that the majority of men and women in the UK think they are consuming fewer calories than they actually are.

The study of 2,000 people found that while the average Brit tries to consume 1,920 calories a day, due to snack consumption, the true intake is around 2,635, on average.

The research showed that 12% of men think they need 3,000 calories to stay the same weight, when in actuality it is 2,500, while 18% of women did not know how many calories to take on in order to maintain the same weight.

Wine, lager and cola were among the only foods where adults over stimated the calorie content.

When questioned on the following foods, respondents gave the following guesses as to how many calories they contained-

Prawn crackers (50g) - Guessed: 150 ~ Actual: 285

Peanut butter (2 tablespoons) - Guessed: 155 ~ Actual: 365

1 poppadum - Guessed: 100 ~ Actual: 125

Large Cinema Sweet Popcorn 198g - Guessed: 270 ~ Actual: 965

1 supermarket pepperoni pizza 490g - Guessed: 355 ~ Actual: 1,100

Large fries - Guessed: 270 ~ Actual: 445

Double stacked burger - Guessed: 380 ~ Actual: 500
