Berkins Deli wins ‘Sausage of the Year’ award

28th Oct 2010 - 00:00
Abstract
In the run up to British Sausage Week 2010 (1st to 7th November), a ‘Limoncello, Lemon Thyme and a Hint of Lemon Zest Sausage’ has been voted the catering sector’s ‘Sausage of the Year’.
Sausage maker, restaurateur and former butcher, Kevin Berkins, was presented with the accolade following the live final of the BPEX Foodservice Sausage of the Year competition 2010, held at London's Butchers Hall on Friday 22nd October. Kevin's sausage was one of fifteen finalists – first, second and third place in each of the competitions five categories – chosen from over 250 entrants. They were then cooked, tasted and scored accordingly, with the winner of the Best Innovative Sausage category, coming out on top. Kevin Berkins, who runs the Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire and the newly opened Berkins Deli next door said: "I couldn't be more delighted! We put a lot of effort into the competition this year and it paid off. We make all of our sausages from scratch on the premises, using fresh, quality ingredients. It is this, coupled with our ability to think outside the box when it comes to flavours, that makes our sausages stand out." BPEX foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger said: "The Sausage of the Year competition is certainly hotly contested and we had many superb entries making judging an exceedingly difficult task. Each entry is scrutinised by industry experts and given a gold, silver or bronze award - accolades that are highly sought after and show off the quality of sausages available in pubs, restaurants, canteens and other outlets today."
