Abstract
Hayden Groves, executive chef with B&I contract caterer Baxter Storey, plans to pedal his way round the courses of three of cycling’s major races in 2017 and raise £1.3m in the process.

He will join former England footballer and leukaemia survivor Geoff Thomas as part of a group of six riders who have set themselves the challenge of riding the routes of all three of cycling’s grand tours – the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana.

The money raised from sponsorship will go charity Cure Leukaemia and, together with a £2.45m grant, help build a blood cancer specialist centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Groves, whose mother-in-law died of cancer last year, said: “I am 42 and the usual aches and pains of training only get worse, but I know that in every pedal stroke me and my teammates are making a real difference to the cancer community.”
