Abstract
Boutique contract caterer bartlett mitchell has just achieved the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s (SRA) top Three-star Champion status rating for the company in an assessment of its sustainability credentials – the first contract caterer to achieve this in the SRA’s new model rating for contract caterers.

bartlett mitchell’s highest scoring area was for the environment, which scored well above the Sustainability Rating benchmark score. The assessors noted some excellent practices, especially in areas such as waste monitoring and only using environmentally friendly cleaning products.

The assessors went on to say that bartlett mitchell demonstrates a strong commitment to society and treating its staff fairly and is to be commended for a number of initiatives that are in place.   The company also communicates its dedication to sustainability and transparent pricing to its customers.

Sally Grimes, quality standards mentor for bartlett mitchell, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to start 2014 with this top star rating from the SRA. We continue to work hard on improving our sustainability performance year on year and it’s good to know that we’re tackling the issues that matter effectively and are improving all the time.

"We may have hit the top Three-star rating now but that doesn’t mean we’ll be resting. We have more actions we want to complete and are still working on areas such as high welfare animal produce, further reducing the amount of air-freighted produce used, setting formal water saving targets and team training on water use reduction, and formalising arrangements regarding regular support for national charities.”

Wendy Bartlett, managing director, added: “This recognition is wonderful news for our team; those based in our operations and at Head Office. They have worked hard at implementing our sustainability initiatives and coming up with new ideas too and this award recognises all that they have achieved.  There is still more we want to do and we’ll work hard on those initiatives but this is a great boost to us on our sustainability path.”
