Abstract
Applications for catering roles took a ‘dive’ in March as salaries continued to fall, data from CV Library has found.

The jobs site found that the number of Brits applying for catering jobs dropped by 8.2% in March, while the number of advertised vacancies continued to soar by almost double (19.1%).

The findings, which analysed job market performance in March and compared the results with the previous year, suggested that the decline in applications could be attributed to a decrease in average pay for new catering roles.

Compared to March 2019, salaries fell by 4.5%.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, said: "Our findings show that the impact of Brexit worries on the catering industry have been dramatic.

“What’s more worrying, however, is that employers’ reactions may have been hasty. By advertising more roles at lower rates of pay, organisations are likely to be left dangerously understaffed. Especially as the slump in sterling against the dollar means that the spending money of overseas tourists will go further than before. This will entice more tourists to visit the UK and provide reassuring stability to restaurants and catering professionals.”

“While it’s tempting to cut recruitment budgets until the outcome of Brexit is confirmed, our data demonstrates that catering companies have a larger pool of talent to choose from right now. With candidates clearly trying to feel out their employment prospects, now’s the time to increase your salary offerings and attract more candidates to your roles.”
