More than half of the festive hot drinks launched by coffee chain operators in the run-up to Christmas contain more than an adult's daily-recommended intake of sugar, according to new research.

OnBuy.com looked at the nutritional value of festive hot drinks by five major coffee chains in the UK; Starbucks, Costa, Caffe Nero, Pret a Manger and Greggs.

It found out that the festive hot drink containing the most grams of sugar was the Caffe Nero Belgian truffle hot chocolate, with 56.9g of sugar, the equivalent to 14 teaspoons.

The chain also took second place with its winter spiced hot chocolate, which contains 51.6g of sugar, nearly 13 teaspoons.

At the other end of the spectrum was Costa with its caramelised orange latte, which has just over five teaspoons of sugar (20.5g)

Of the top ten most calorific festive hot drinks, seven were some form of hot chocolate.

Pret a Manger’s orange hot chocolate took top spot, with 454 calories, followed by its mint hot chocolate with 452 calories.

Greggs’ salted caramel latte had only 240 calories, with Caffe Nero making the festive drink with the least amount of calories at 153.
