Fun Friday Food Facts 2018 Vol.18

04/05/2018 - 08:35
We're sure you're all aware that it's International Hummus Day next week (if you're half the fan that we are!) so here's our top hummus-related Friday Food Facts!
  • Hummus has conquered America. The hummus industry has grown from a mere $5m in 2002 to $725m annually in 2016 according to numbers cited by the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council. It's estimated that 25% of American homes now stock hummus in the fridge
  • While hummus is commonly used as a dip for pitta bread and crudités, in the Middle East and North Africa (where it originated) it’s often eaten at breakfast, lunch or dinner and in some regions, as a meal itself!
  • Americans aren’t the only hummus fanatics out there – there have been three movies made about the stuff to-date: 'Make Hummus Not War,' 'The Hummus Enforcement Agency’ and 'Hummus! The Movie’
  • Israel may have its differences with the Arab world, but hummus is a rare exception. The Arabic dish has been adopted as the Israeli national dish and has spawned many hummus-only restaurants in the country
  • According to one nutritionist, hummus is so rich in protein, it can help fight hunger cravings and balance blood sugar levels, which could help curb excessive snacking. The iron content is also said to help boost energy, making you more motivated to hit the gym
  • Chickpeas, the main ingredient of hummus, can be eaten straight from the tin, should you wish, as they have already been cooked.
