British wholesaler Booker Group has announced that its second quarter like-for-like sales rose 1.1% in the 12 weeks to 8 September 2017.

Booker, which agreed a multi-billion pound takeover by Tesco in January this year, saw its results strenghed by sales figures in catering and retail supply, with the group's non-tobacco sales up 5.8% in total.

Like-for-like sales across the business were hit by tobacco sales falling 9%, affected by the recent changes in tobacco legislation.

Chief executive, Charles Wilson, said: “Our plans to focus, drive and broaden Booker Group are on track. The competition review of the planned merger with Tesco plc is progressing.

“We continue to help our retail, catering and small business customers prosper through improving our choice, prices and service.”

As well as supplying to over 400,000 caterers and convenience chains Budgens and Londis, Booker serves casual dining restaurants such Wagamama and Carluccio’s.

Booker and Tesco’s estimated £3.7 billion pound deal is currently going through a review process with the Competition and Markets Authority.
