Hotel and catering short-term staff in high demand

Hotel and catering saw the most pronounced increase in demand for short-term staff in March of all job categories covered by the IHS Markit/REC Report on Jobs, published this week.

The report provides a guide to the UK labour market, drawing on original survey data provided by recruitment consultancies.  

The blue collar category saw the second highest increase in demand for short-term staff in March, according to the data.

One of the other biggest findings in the report was that there was a further sharp increase in permanent staff placements across the UK in March, with the pace of expansion edging up fractionally since February. In contrast, temp billings during March expanded at the weakest pace for over a year.

Staff vacancies continued to rise markedly at the end of the first quarter. This was despite growth of demand easing slightly to the lowest for 15 months.

Overall candidate availability continued to decline sharply during March, though the latest reduction was the weakest seen for one year.
