Coeliac UK, an independent charity to assist people living gluten free has partnered with Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. The partnership will offer a £750k research fund to improve the quality of gluten free options.

Businesses and researchers are urged to apply by the 3rd of September to be in with the chance of receiving a share of the fund. Grants can range from £50k to £250k.

Chefs, caterers, food scientists and menu developers are encouraged to put applications forward to further enhance the range of gluten free choices.

Chief Executive of Coeliac UK, Sarah Sleet said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses and researchers to develop competitive advantages. We are delighted to be working with Innovate UK to promote more innovation in these areas.”

Over the past decade the variety and quality of gluten free products has largely improved. However, the problems people living with coeliac disease face are that the products are largely more expensive and have a lower nutritional profile. Coeliac UK stresses the importance of the ongoing need to improve the nutrition value, flavour, and methods of preservation in order to keep costs low and prolong the shelf life of many gluten free foods.

Coeliac disease is a serious illness where the body’s immune system reacts to gluten found in food, causing the body to attack itself. 1 in 100 people in the UK have the disease, which can take 13 years to diagnose.

Innovation Leader for Food and Nutrition at Innovate UK, Kathryn Miller said: “This is a new partnership for Innovate UK, working with high profile 3rd sector organisations such as Coeliac UK. I would encourage others who may be thinking of applying not to miss out on such an exciting opportunity.”
