Bryan Whittaker MBE, technical consultant for the Catering Equipment Suppliers Association (CESA), has been honoured with a Distinguished Service Certificate from the British Standards Institute (BSI).

Whittaker, who has worked with CESA for 28 years, received the award earlier this month for his ‘valuable contribution to the development of British, European and international standards.'

During his years with CESA, Whittaker has seen the company’s standards move from being UK structured to being in line with EU directives, with Whittaker credited with setting new standards in ensuring the business met with European standards.

He was awarded an MBE for his work on the Machinery Safety Directive in 2005, a moment he describes as the highlight of his almost 30 years with CESA.

“It was no easy task,” said Whittaker. “At the time there was a bit of a tussle between the various European nations involved. But in the end we managed to find a typically British compromise.”

CESA director Keith Warren said: "If there’s anyone who can claim to have helped set the standards in health and safety in foodservice equipment and design, it’s Bryan Whittaker.  He has done more than anyone else to support the work, and has had a profound influence on the development of UK and European standards.”
